Study of Lung Compliance (Effective Static Compliance) in ARDS

Abstract
To evaluate the prognostic parameter of ARDS (Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome), clinical review, serial ABG (Arterial Blood Gas) and ESC (Effective Static Compliance) were measured at Melical Intensive Care Unit of Seoul National University Hospital, during the period of June 1981 to May 1982. The results are summarized as follows;
(1) The total number of ARDS patients who subject to this study were 24 (male 11, female 13) and overall survival rate was 41. 6%.
(2) ABG on admission showed marked hypoxia and PA-aDO2 was 480.8 mmHg in survial group and 477.8 mmHg in expired group on 0.8 FiO2.
(3) ESC which measured during the application of Ventilator showed significant difference between the survival and expired group from the first hospital day and it become progressively divergent between the two groups.
(4) PaO2/PAO2 value which measured during the Ventilator application showed 11.2 in expired group and 10.8 in survived group.
(5) ESC measurement appeared to be a good reliable prognostic parameter for the evaluation of ARDS during the acute stage course.
